In the Bamboo Grove area of Chapter 1, a hidden path beyond the Snake Trail shrine leads to a damp creek and eventually to a cave where Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang waits. This enormous frog Yaoguai Chief is not required for the main story, but it is the first of six frog Yaoguai bosses scattered across Black Myth: Wukong. As of 2026, this optional fight remains a useful early test for new builds, and defeating all six frogs unlocks an achievement and provides the Tadpoles needed to fully upgrade the Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang Spirit, so the detour is well worth the effort.

Before approaching the cave, players should prepare carefully. The first step is to reach the Snake Trail shrine in Bamboo Grove. From there, the stairs to the right lead to the Blessed Gourd Master, an NPC who upgrades the gourd so that Spirits can be absorbed and used in battle. Speaking with him before continuing is essential. After that, crossing the bridge and breaking the bamboo fence opens access to a small creek. Moving down into the water and heading right reveals several smaller frog enemies. Clearing them prevents unnecessary distractions during the boss fight. Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang appears further ahead inside a shadowed cave.

Although Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang is noticeably easier than Guangzhi, the giant frog still hits hard enough to punish careless play. Spending a few Sparks on Health and improving the staff stance are both useful early investments. The dodge is the most important defensive tool in this fight because timed evasions avoid damage and create opportunities for counterattacks. Crafting the early game armour at a shrine is also recommended since even a modest defense boost makes a meaningful difference. For players who want a much easier encounter, unlocking the Guangzhi transformation spell before the fight is one of the best preparations. The transformed state applies fire damage, and Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang is particularly weak to fire. Light attacks can eventually inflict Burn, dealing damage over time even when the boss moves away.

Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang has a modest moveset, but its large body and gap-closing abilities make positioning important. At the start of the fight, and whenever the player retreats too far, the frog leaps toward the Destined One. The jump is not difficult to avoid on its own, but it is a reminder that creating distance to heal can be risky. When the boss is close, it can perform a frontal sweep attack. This may come as a single swipe or as a sequence of two, sometimes followed by a double-arm smash. Moving sideways is effective against these long-reaching attacks. A single sweep often leaves the boss open for several counterattacks.

The most troublesome move is the Back Leg attack. The boss turns around as though preparing to jump away, but instead strikes with its rear legs. The unusual timing can make dodging difficult, and this is an excellent moment to use Immobilize. Freezing the boss creates a clear opening for damage and prevents the attack from connecting. The Guangzhi transformation should be saved for when health is low or healing is unavailable. In that form, fire-based strikes deal heavy damage to the frog and can refresh the Burn effect. Even when the boss retreats, the damage-over-time effect continues to reduce its health.

Once the giant frog falls, it leaves behind a useful set of rewards. The table below summarizes the drops:

Reward Amount
XP 482
Will 384
Stone Spirit 1
Tadpole 1

The most valuable reward is the Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang Spirit Summon. When activated, the spirit performs a frontal sweep attack with its tongue, making it a strong option for dealing with groups of enemies. Like other Spirit abilities, it requires accumulated Qi to use. The Tadpole can upgrade the Spirit, but additional Tadpoles can only be obtained by finding and defeating the other frog Yaoguai bosses. Since one frog boss appears per chapter, players who want a fully upgraded Spirit should keep an eye out for them throughout the journey. After this fight, the next major challenge in Chapter 1 is the more difficult Whiteclad Noble, followed by Guangmou.
